Hope O'Brien
Costume Designer
Hope O’Brien (they/them) is a costume designer, dancer and artist based in London. They have worked first as graduate intern, and now as a freelancer, in the costume department at Trinity Laban, designing, making and sourcing costumes for contemporary dance shows. These have included creating original costumes for works by Takeshi Matsumoto and Tough Boys, and recreating costumes for repertoire such as Lea Anderson’s ‘Yippeee!’, Uday Shankar’s ‘Unfettered Mind’ and Boy Blue’s ‘R.E.B.E.L’. They have also costumed their own choreographic works, ‘it’s about holding’ and ‘Grey Area’, the latter created under Eye to Eye Collective which they co-founded in 2025. They now turn their sights to theatre, with ‘Practically Imperfect’ as their theatrical costume debut. In their own practice, Hope works across disciplines such as choreography, performance, fashion and costume, from a Queer, neurodivergent perspective. They have researched themes ranging from pockets and fashion history, to consent and touch in dance. Hope’s work is whimsical and fun with a punk edge. They enjoy diving deeply into whatever subject matter is thrown their way to create something beautiful, strange and reflective.
